Reflection In Revenue: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On our last reflection I promised our next New Year’s Revenue Resolution, but as it’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day I think a different reflection is appropriate. As I reflect today in revenue management I can’t help to think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. especially on the holiday named in his honor. After 17 years in hospitality I can’t help but to recognize and appreciate the impact Dr. King’s legacy leaves today and its impact on my career specifically. Due to the efforts of Dr. King, millions of minorities have opportunity and have provided a diversity to hospitality never previously seen or imagined. A diversity that are the building blocks of the best of everything hospitality has to offer. A better understanding and inclusion of all guests regardless of culture.

African American, Hispanic American, and Asian American individuals like myself would have never had the opportunity to share our cultures, talents, and ideas to impact, influence, and improve the hospitality community. While we still have work as a society to do in order to truly achieve Dr. King’s now nearly 60 year old dream. We have made amazing progress in equality and I am blessed to be a hospitality professional because of men and women like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights activists and groups of his era.

To Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to civil rights activists both then and now, thank you for the work you have done to provide opportunities for millions of children like myself. That we have an opportunity that is based on content of our characters, the capabilities of our minds, and the work ethic we have and not solely on the color of our skin.

I hope you had a marvelous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tomorrow we will return to reflecting on our New Year’s Revenue Resolutions, with #3 Review your compset and market for changes.
